Final Project

I didn't make many changes between the sketchup model and the final chapel, but two important ones were the addition of slit windows near the roof of the main chapel to let light wash over the ceiling, and the addition of columns to support the roof, which is now separate from the walls. The columns are probably my favorite last-minute addition to the chapel because they add a sense of rhythm and order to an otherwise irregular space. They are tapered toward the bottom, so they echo the form of the fins at the entry to the chapel lobby. This variation in the columns' width also draws the viewer's eye upwards, and creates an optical illusion that makes the chapel seem taller than it actually is.

Access to the chapel is via a patio that levels the ground near the entry. After cutting into the hill, I created a short flight of stairs that joins the patio and the natural ground plane. Here, half the site has been removed to show the stairs.
The chapel as it would be seen by a person driving west on the road.
